Obsolete

Ten words that won’t be in the dictionary in 20 years.

You may think that words, once in the dictionary, stay forever. Well, for some that is the case as they have survived for hundreds of years. I just caught a post by Carmel Lobello on the deathandtaxes website about 18 such words gathered from “The Word Museum: The Most Remarkable English Words Ever Forgotten” by Jeffrey Kacirk, and on a blog called Obsolete Word of The Day.

It got me thinking about future words that could go obsolete in just 20-years.

Here are some of the ones from the Carmel’s existing list first:

  • Pussyvan: A flurry, temper.
  • Lunting: Walking while smoking a pipe.
  • Groak: To silently watch someone while they are eating, hoping to be invited to join them.
  • Spermologer: A picker-up of trivia, of current news, a gossip monger, what we would today call a columnist.
  • Tyromancy: Divining by the coagulation of cheese. (haha)
  • Queerplungers: Cheats who throw themselves into the water in order that they may be taken up by their accomplices, who carry them to one of the houses appointed by the Humane Society for the recovery of drowned persons, where they are rewarded by the society with a guinea each, and the supposed drowned person, pretending he was driven to that extremity by great necessity, is also frequently sent away with a contribution in his pocket.
  • Resistentialism (my personal favourite): The seemingly spiteful behaviour shown by inanimate objects.
  • Zafty: A person very easily imposed upon.

Here’s my starter for ten for 20-years-time:

  1. Landline: A form of communication per home and office via hand devices that required a network of millions of miles of overground and underground wiring.
  2. Paperback: A physical medium for reading books.
  3. Europe: A loose collection of independent countries, now known as United Republics of Deutschland.
  4. United Kingdom: A small group of island countries that existed before sea levels rose due to global warming. Now known as the tropical holiday resort New Isle of White.
  5. Bank: Safe houses for fraudsters and extortionists before the Peoples Revolution of Fiscal Accountability of 2050.
  6. 2D: Cheap cinema tickets.
  7. Fracking: A controversial seismic generator.
  8. Shops: Places where people actually went to go to buy things.
  9. SMS: Communication via tiny personal devices that required typing (see below).
  10.  Typing: What people used to do before the Voicernet.
